Summiting Sherpas Set Pair of Mount Everest Records

Of those who reached the top of the mountain this season, it's worth mentioning Kami Rita Sherpa who has summited for a record 22 time.

Ethnic sherpas, renowned for their endurance and experience at high altitudes, serve as guides for many foreign mountaineers attempting to climb the highest Himalayan peaks.

Both of the other previous record holders are retired from climbing.

Before leaving the Everest base camp, Kami had announced that he intends to climb Everest 25 times. The 44-year-old extended her own record for the most climbs by a woman.

Kami Rita Sherpa made the maiden ascent of Qomolangma in 1994 when he was 24 years old.

Past year seven people lost their lives on the world's highest peak, while 449 summited from the Nepal side and at least another 120 made it to the top from the north side in Tibet.

According to Gyanendra Shrestha, a Tourism Ministry official stationed at the Everest Base Camp, said that 94 climbers successfully reached atop the summit of Mount Everest today. She lives most of the year in the US state of CT and has a son and two daughters.

She moved to the United States 16 years ago and says she plans to continue climbing, while keeping her job in the supermarket.

The route to the summit was opened up by a team of Sherpa guides earlier this week.

Drama on the the highest slopes of Everest this morning where, during a summit bid on the Tibetan side of the mountain, a group of mountaineers belonging to the Alpenglow expedition led by America's Adrian Ballinger encountered serious issues with their supplementary oxygen regulators.

Sherpa climbed the Everest for the 21st time in 2017.

He was taken to a hospital for a checkup but appeared to be in good condition.

Dozens of mountaineers and Sherpas have climbed the Everest since the beginning of the spring climbing season.
