Dozens feared drowned after boat carrying wedding party capsizes in India

Till now, 17 people have been rescued while others are still missing.

The search and rescue operations are now underway with two teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) with 35 members each deployed at the spot, along with a 90-member team of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).

Rescuers were searching for survivors Wednesday after a river ferry capsized in heavy winds in rural south India, leaving anywhere from 10 to 40 people missing.

According to police, the boat sailed from Devipatnam to reach Kondamodalu at 3.30 pm on Tuesday. The Chief Minister directed the District Collector to deploy special teams to rescue the victims, a release said. The passengers had a narrow escape as the driver wheeled the boat to the shore and they jumped off before the entire boat was completely gutted. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu also took to the micro-blogging site and called the incident "highly painful".
