War Between North, South Korea May Finally End At Upcoming Summit

According to CNBC, North and South Korean authorities are in talks to end hostilities ahead of next week's historic meeting between communist dictator Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

North and South Korea are discussing plans to formally end the 65-year-old conflict between the two countries, South Korean newspaper Munhwa Ilbo reported Tuesday, citing an unidentified senior government official with knowledge of diplomacy and security issues. -South Korean military exercises.

The news comes from an unnamed South Korea official who said the countries have been in negotiations around the matter in advance of the summit.

John Delury, an associate professor of Chinese studies at Yonsei University in Seoul, told Bloomberg that he believed ending the conflict between the nations would be "as complicated as denuclearization", a topic President Donald Trump is set to discuss with Kim during their scheduled meeting next month.

Trump had accepted an invitation from Kim on behalf of South Korean delegates to the U.S.in March.

It remains unclear at this time whether or not such an ambitious agenda can be achieved given the uncertainty of North Korean demands, which could potentially include the removal of strategic American military assets from South Korea, halting the deployment of nuclear or strategic assets during joint military exercises with South Korea, assurances that the US will not conduct a conventional or nuclear attack, the conversion of the armistice agreement into a peace treaty, and normalized diplomatic relations between Washington and Pyongyang.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in first invited North Korea to a summit in April in the DMZ. But while North Korea seems to have at least paused its nuclear activity for the time being, the rogue nation has not confirmed any sort of agenda for the meeting at this point, and giving up their prized nuclear weapons indefinitely be an unexpected result.
