US To Announce New Economic Sanctions On Russia

The United States claimed to have met its obligations, while Russian Federation said it could not confirm.

Trump cancelled a planned trip to Latin America on 13 April to focus instead on talks with Western allies about possible military action to punish Assad.

France has continued to talk regularly with Russian Federation even as East-West tensions have grown. The United States, with President Donald Trump's long-term strategy for the country still uncertain, is left as a less influential player. Also under consideration are Russian companies that sell helicopters and helicopter parts to Syria, sources familiar with the matter said.

"Better than a military strike would be serious discussions between the US and Russian Federation on ending the conflict".

"We are considering additional sanctions on Russian Federation and a decision will be made in the near future", said press secretary Sarah Sanders. "You must look at reality".

"Our job was never to take Assad out", Haley said, referring to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The United States also imposed sanctions on 24 Russians earlier this month over what USA intelligence agencies have said was interference in the U.S. presidential election.

Zasypkin, the Russian ambassador, made his comments to Hezbollah's al-Manar TV.

Russian lawmaker Dmitry Sablin, who met with Assad, said he appeared upbeat and believed the airstrikes would unify the country. "This must be stopped".

It comes as London has blamed Moscow for a nerve agent attack on a former double agent and his daughter in the English city of Salisbury last month.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said any United States missile salvo could be an attempt to destroy evidence of the reported gas attack in the Syrian town of Douma, for which Damascus and Moscow have denied any responsibility.

Haley declined to say whether there would be an automatic response because "we don't know" what Assad will do.

"As Secretary-General of the United Nations, it is my duty to remind Member States that there is an obligation, particularly when dealing with matters of peace and security, to act consistently with the Charter of the United Nations and with worldwide law in general", he told ambassadors, echoing a statement issued in the wake of the airstrikes. "History will set things right, and Washington already bears the heavy responsibility for the bloody outrage in Yugoslavia, Iraq and Libya".

A BARRAGE of cruise missiles rained down on Syrian regime's poison fuel amenities into the in a single day and into the early hours on April 14. Moscow's response shows Washington appears to have succeeded in delivering a blow that did not provoke Russian Federation militarily. According to the United States, the Syrian government guilty of using chemical weapons against its own population and the global community must take steps to stop Assad.

Over the past week, pro-Kremlin officials, independent analysts and the state-allied news media described the situation in Syria as a uniquely risky moment.

None of the air strikes hit zones where Russian air defense systems protect the Russian bases of Tartus and Hmeimim, Russian news agencies cited the Ministry of Defense as saying. The result, according to the worst-case predictions, could be a new world war.

In an interview published Sunday in the Journal du Dimanche newspaper, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said Moscow "should join our efforts to promote a political process in Syria that would allow a way out of the crisis".

Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Lebanon's Hezbollah group that has hundreds of fighters backing Assad's forces, said the airstrikes failed to "terrorize or break the spirits" of Syria and its allies.
