United Kingdom ministers agree need to deter Syrian use of chemical weapons

British Prime Minister Theresa May summoned her "war cabinet" Thursday morning to discuss possible military intervention in Syria over a suspected chemical attack which killed dozens.

The possibility of a military strike on Syria was discussed by the United States and its partners, particularly France and the United Kingdom, in the wake of reports on an alleged chemical weapons attack in the Syrian city of Duma.

She continued: "The use of chemical weapons can not go unchallenged".

He said the attack was staged on April 7 to coincide with military action by Syrian government forces, after the rebel group Jaish al-Islam that long controlled Eastern Ghouta carried out shelling of Damascus from April 3 to 6.

The prospect of a confrontation between Russian Federation, the Syrian government's ally, and the West have been running high since Trump said on Wednesday that missiles "will be coming" in response to the attack in the Syrian town of Douma on April 7.

"Cabinet agreed on the need to take action to alleviate humanitarian distress and to deter the further use of chemical weapons by the Assad regime", May's office said in a statement.

Ministers agreed that May should continue to work with the United States and France to come up with the right response.

Mrs. May is reportedly prepared to take action without seeking parliamentary consent, as leaders have done before military action in recent times, and attack submarines, armed with cruise missiles, are understood to be moving into range.

Britain has launched air strikes against Islamic State militants in Syria, but not against the country's government.

Syria's been fighting civil war for over seven years.

Earlier, the BBC said May would not seek prior parliamentary approval for joining military action because she favoured taking action soon.

Further, the Russian ministry has also claimed to have certain evidence proving the direct involvement of the U.S. in Syria chemical attack.

YouGov adds: "Across all parties voters are more likely to oppose than support missile strikes, although Conservative voters are the most evenly split with 34 per cent in opposition and 33 per cent in support".

"What we've got here in Syria is a choice between monsters on the one hand and maniacs on the other", Julian Lewis, the chairman of the House of Commons defence committee, told the BBC. She changed her tone speaking to reporters Wednesday afternoon, insisting that "all the indications" were that the Assad regime was responsible for the "shocking, barbaric" attack.
