UFC Glendale: Dustin Poirier demands title shot after stopping Justin Gaethje cold

The fifth-ranked lightweight, Poirier bloodied Gaethje in the first round and finished him off with a flurry early in the fourth to move a step closer to a title fight.

Gaethje, a modern-day barbarian who is nearly impervious to pain, seemed unfazed by a cut above his left eye in Round 1 and continued to chip away at Poirier's right leg with a steady stream of damaging kicks. The decision turned out to be a smart one as Poirier quickly rocked Gaethje to open Round 4 with a stiff counter left hand.

Poirier knew his fight with Justin Gaethje would be like this. Ultimately, it was Poirier's approach that paid off, as he polished off Gaethje with a series of punches to earn a technical knockout victory 33 seconds into the fourth stanza.

"I've been knocked out, climbed back, over and over again".

"I'm content with what happened, as stupid and insane as that sounds". "I don't fight to win or lose".

"It's the entertainment factor for me and I will be known and remembered as one of the most entertaining fighters that ever did it". I go in there and I fight for money.

In the co-main, Alex Oliveira emerged victorious in a back and forth battle against a game Carlos Condit by catching him with an upkick and then choking him out against the fence. I'm ready to go, and gold is next.

Poirier, though, is a man whose own penchant for action could well rival anyone's and sure enough, when push came to shove, he was able to handle the heat and record a huge win for his title aspirations. And while Poirier landed several hard combinations, Gaethje walked through the punches and continued to batter the Louisiana native's right leg.

"I didn't see the shot - I think it hit me somewhere on the left side - and I backed myself up against the cage, which is something I don't want to do with a guy like that, especially when they hurt you", Poirier said. "I smell it. I feel it in the air".

"This guy would've died in here if Herb Dean didn't stop it", Poirier said.
