Ring smart doorbells get big price cuts on Amazon Canada

Google's Nest division has similar cameras to Ring, and recently launched its own video doorbell and home security system.

Amazon's Cloud Cam is yet another product under the company's direction that is, in many ways, a competitor of Ring and Blink. However, part of the deal will be the transfer of Ring's customer data to Amazon.

In an exclusive interview with ZDNet's sister site CNET, Amazon's head of devices and services, Dave Limp, and Ring CEO Jamie Siminoff discussed the future of Amazon and Ring.

Amazon said it has completed its acquisition of video doorbell maker Ring, which the company bought last month for a reported Dollars 1 billion. "The entire Ring team is excited to continue working hard to create products and services that bring real benefits to people's lives and build safer communities for all our neighbors". Amazon has also said that customer service teams for each company will continue to operate to mitigate any interruptions in service. That said, I wouldn't be too surprised to see the company pushing toward an Alexa-based smart home hub solution to rival offerings like Apple's Home app. These moves indicate that the company is setting itself up for a dominant position in the smart home market. It's a massive price drop on the first-generation Ring doorbell. But for Amazon, Ring provides a popular and trusted brand that will aid its push into customer homes, from Alexa devices to in-home deliveries, which is seen as the next big thing in online retail.

The speculation is that Amazon will seek to integrate Alexa into these products going forward.

Ring's Video Doorbell has been effective in reducing burglaries in neighborhoods by as much as 55 percent, according to an LAPD pilot program.
