Removing "Void if Removed" Stickers Doesn't Void Your Warranty

Removing

It's common for manufacturers of cars, video game consoles, and other products to insist that consumers will void their warranty if they use unauthorized fix services or unauthorized third-party parts.

There has also been an official statement by Thomas B. Pahl, Acting Director of the Federal Trade Commission, who said that tying warranty coverage with the use of particular products hurts both consumers, and small businesses, which want to be competitive with their services.

The FTC has found that some companies mandate that parts from specific manufacturers must be used in order to keep warranties in tact- this is more likely to affect automobile and mobile device companies.

The Federal Trade Commission released a statement today saying it's sent warning letters to several major companies in the USA reminding them that it's illegal to stipulate warranty coverage is dependent on using prescribed parts and service providers for repairs.

In each case, the company states its products must not use unauthorized parts or service, be used with products not sold or licensed by the company, or have had a warranty seal altered, defaced, or removed. The Playstation 4 has various stickers that must be broken to open the device that explicitly state that tampering with them invalidates the warranty. iPhones and MacBooks don't have a warranty-voiding sticker, but Apple Geniuses are trained to look for clues that would tip the company off to the fact that the device has been opened.

We've all purchased products that have a little sticker on the back that says something along the lines of "warranty void if removed".

Apple in February ditched a warranty condition that excluded coverage on iPhones that had displays repaired or replaced by third-party providers.

The illegal act here is companies appearing to "tie warranty coverage to consumers' use of authorized parts or service".

If companies don't update their policies on their websites within 30 days, the FTC said it will consider enforcement action against them. This has been a contentious issue for consumer electronics, where it's often hard to get repairs done through a third party.
