Police expected to take stand in Cosby trial

Andrea Constand, plaintiff for the Bill Cosby trial, arrives at the Montgomery County Courthouse for the sixth day of his sexual assault retrial on April 16, 2018, in Norristown, Penn.

A Canadian basketball star who is the chief accuser in Bill Cosby's retrial has denied she is framing the comedian for sexual assault.

Andrea Constand testified that in 2004, Cosby drugged her and then raped her.

Thanks to #MeToo, the jury will be deliberating in a very different cultural climate from previous year when the first trial against Cosby ended in a hung jury.

A judge blocked Jackson from testifying at last year's trial after Constand took the stand and denied knowing her.

"He said to me, 'Don't worry, Mom, there was no penile penetration,"' Gianna Constand testified.

Prosecutors have called five other women to the stand who said Mr Cosby drugged and assaulted them, too.

"Quaaludes happen to be the drug that kids, young people were using to party with and there were times when I wanted to have them just in case", Cosby testified.

Cosby compensated Constand £3.38 million to settle a civil suit that Constand registered after Pennsylvania prosecutors at 2005 originally dropped to bill Cosby to its alleged attack.

Cosby's lawyers argued the testimony is irrelevant to his retrial because there is no evidence he gave Constand the drug.

Gianna Constand said she was "very combative" with Cosby, demanding he tell her the medication he'd given her daughter and what he'd done to her.

The unsealing of the deposition, at the request of The Associated Press, led prosecutors to reopen Cosby's criminal case in 2015.

Cosby, 80, has denied any acts of non-consensual sexual activity.

Prosecutors are building to the conclusion of their case against Cosby with investigators and a pharmaceutical expert expected to take the stand beginning on Tuesday (Wednesday NZT).

Constand was cross-examined by defense lawyer Tom Mesereau who asked Constand about the amount of time she spent alone with the former actor.

Bliss listed several jobs and career opportunities that Gianna Constand was unaware of at NBC and the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, that Andrea Constand interviewed for because of her connection to Cosby.

The court also heard a 2005 audio recording between Gianna Constand and Cosby, in which Cosby offers to pay for Andrea Constand's schooling.

Andrea Constand told jurors she doesn't "recall ever having a conversation with" Marguerite Jackson.

Constand says she felt a duty to answer Cosby's inquiries since he was an alumnus and trustee. He also questioned her about her various phone calls to Cosby in the days after she was assaulted and laid special stress on the fact she called Cosby twice on Valentine's Day.

Mesereau hasn't set off many of fireworks yet, but in more than two hours of cross examination on Friday the veteran trial lawyer had Constand flustered with questions about whether she'd ever said she was affectionate toward Cosby, and a line of attack centred on her involvement in a Ponzi scheme. This time, defence lawyers are trying to portray Constand as an opportunist who feigned romantic interest in him and then levelled a false accusation of sexual assault so she could file a lawsuit.

Constand recorded the phone call with Cosby but he started being more cautious with his words from then on.

His face remained animated throughout the afternoon - growing wide-eyed at the mention of his own penis, shaking his head as lawyers quibbled and openly chuckling when judge Steven O'Neill allowed a question through, saying "it's not that leading".

First trial: Agrusa asked Constand, "When you travelled to the away games while you were director of basketball operations, did you know or work with a woman named Margo Jackson?"

Cosby could face 10 years in prison if convicted.

The judge has ruled that Jackson can take the stand at the retrial but indicated he could revisit the issue after Constand was finished testifying.
