PlayStation 5 Unlikely to Surface Until At Least 2019

Two sources who are familiar with Sony's plans for the PS5 said that it is unlikely to release in 2019, let alone 2018. If the next PlayStation was set to be released sometime in the next couple of years then there would likely be a lot more talk about it amongst developers and other industry figures. To talk about the latest version of the PlayStation series, we have to talk about the Sony PlayStation 4 Pro. However, recent rumors have suggested that Sony has been giving out PlayStation 5 devkits to certain studios, with the report stating that Sony has asked studios to keep the devkits in locked rooms and restrict access to the device.

This is an unlikely scenario if the console is indeed arriving this year, because if it was coming, it would already be in manufacturing, and game creators would be developing for it.

Kotaku's extremely well-connected Jason Schreier has recently spoken to dozens of developers, both first and third-party, about the next generation of consoles, and most knew nothing about it. "It's all about what they think is the best sweet spot in terms of hardware". At the moment, you shouldn't expect the PlayStation 5 to be released in the immediate future.

Last week, SemiAccurate claimed that Sony had shipped a large number of PS5 development kits to game developers. While it was previously rumored that dev kits for the PlayStation 5 had been sent out to developers, with this speculation suggesting that the PS5 would be released sooner rather than later, the console is instead more likely to launch in 2020 than it is in the next two years.

The lack of backwards compatibility does indicate that the upcoming new gaming console may be featuring significantly advanced hardware, given the fact that titles developed specifically for it won't run on the older systems. According to the article's sources, the expectation is that the PlayStation 5 will be a full-blown next-generation console in that it will run games that won't work on PlayStation 4, in essence leaving behind the last generation of hardware as it's been traditional in the console market. An employee at a major gaming studio told Kotaku that they had received the proper PlayStation 4 devkits about a year before the console's release in November 2013.
