Paul Ryan on James Comey: 'I don't know the guy'

Over the last 24 hours, a steady stream of embarrassing details from the book have emerged, including that chief of staff John Kelly allegedly called Trump "dishonorable" for firing Comey and that the president urged Comey to investigate unsubstantiated rumors that he was secretly filmed with prostitutes urinating in front of him in a Moscow hotel room. "No one is above that rule of law system". Trump has called the special counsel probe a "witch hunt" and repeatedly insisted there was no collusion between his campaign and Russian Federation.

And Trump said Comey's handling of an investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server while secretary of state would "go down as one of the worst "botch jobs" of history". Comey announced in July 2016 that he would not recommend charges against Clinton, but stated publicly that Clinton and her aides had been "extremely careless" in handling classified information.

President Donald Trump laced into James Comey as an "untruthful slime ball" on Friday as the White House and the national Republican Party mounted a withering counterattack against the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director and his stinging new memoir. When speaking to then-President-elect Trump and his team about the election scandal, Comey was surprised at how focused they were on the public relations aspect, he said.

Comey said he was "operating in a world where Hillary Clinton was going to beat Donald Trump, and so I'm sure that it was a factor".

He described Trump as volatile, defensive and concerned more about his own image than about alleged Russian meddling in the presidential election. "He said, 'If there's even a 1% chance that my wife thinks that's true, that's bad.' And I remember thinking, 'How could your wife think there's a 1% chance that you were with prostitutes peeing on each other in Moscow?'" he said. The dossier was a 35-page document containing raw intelligence compiled by former British intelligence agent Christopher Steele, and was commissioned as opposition research during the 2016 elections.

In calling Comey a leaker, Trump is likely referring to the notes Comey admitted to leaking to his friend. Asked by NBC's Chuck Todd if he felt Comey was a "man of integrity", Ryan stated that what he knows of Comey would indicate he is.

Trump was anxious there was a chance his wife, Melania Trump, would believe the allegations.

As for "lewd dossier allegations" the Post alludes to in its headline? When asked about if the letter had done so, Comey said "I hope not". I paused, again. "You will always get honesty from me", I said.

Then Comey's relationship with the president cooled further after Comey took exception to Trump saying that Russian President Vladimir Putin might be a killer, but the U.S.
