Multi-state E.Coli outbreak sickens two in CT

An additional four have been reported in Idaho, and two cases each in CT and Pennsylvania.

In a Tuesday, April 10 update, the CDC reports the outbreak had further reached the Midwest in OH and Pennsylvania. Restaurants and retailers are not advised to avoid serving or selling any particular food.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and food safety and inspection officials from the Department of Agriculture are also looking into the matter, according to the CDC. Idaho is right behind with four infections.

The first case of E. coli in New Jersey was reported on March 28, with other cases reported in Hunterdon, Middlesex, Somerset, and Warren counties, according to state Epidemiologist Tina Tan.

The illnesses are said to have started on dates ranging from March 22 to March 31 in people ranging in age from 12 to 84 years.

New Jersey has the largest share of people infected, with six cases reported in the state.

Six people have been hospitalized and no deaths have been reported, as officials seek to determine what caused the outbreak.

People who are infected with E. coli bacteria can experience severe diarrhea and vomiting. While most people recover within a week, however, some develop a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome. None of the patients has died.

Even though the first E. Coli cases have been registered on the USA territory in late March, only in April the situation has become more serious and was called an outbreak.

"The investigation is still ongoing and a specific food item, grocery store, or restaurant chain has not been identified as the sources of infections", the CDC said.

Wash hands after using the restroom or changing diapers, before and after preparing or eating food, and after contact with animals.
