Mac 32-bit Support Ending, Users Being Warned

"The technologies that define today's Mac experience - such as Metal graphics acceleration - work only with 64-bit apps". The notification will be seen in the first instance of opening an app that's only compatible with 32-bit in macOS High Sierra 10.13.4.

Users can check which apps are 32-bit or 64-bit by going to About this Mac and pressing System Report, scrolling down to Software and then selecting Applications. To help explain what is going on, the message features a Learn More button.

While Apple hasn't detailed exactly what "without compromise" means, it's my understanding that 32-bit apps will run on the successor to High Sierra due this fall... just with some sort of undefined compromise. The notice will read that the app is "not optimised" for Apple's platform, but it will still run.

High Sierra (10.13), the current version of macOS, will be the last version to support 32-bit apps "without compromise". Still, when the big day finally rolls around, there will nearly certainly be complaints nonetheless.

A reminder was posted to Apple's developer portal in January, urging developers to update existing App Store titles. One of the items is 64-bit (Intel).

The 32-bit phase-out on macOS follows the complete transition to 64-bit apps on the iPhone, though there Apple has more control due to the App Store. Also, even Apple hasn't moved all its apps to 64-bit. "This app needs to be updated by its developer to improve compatibility". That, together with security concerns, are the two most likely reasons for cutting off support for apps made to run on an operating system only a few years old.

Apple followed a similar transition process for the iOS as well, giving alert pop-ups on 32-bit iOS apps with iOS 10.3.

"The 64-bit transition for macOS and macOS apps is still underway, so final transition dates have not yet been established". The bar on 32-bit iOS apps was one of the key reasons the number of iOS apps in the App Store fell previous year.

Keep following us to get the next update from Apple on this matter. They can also potentially handle processor requests more efficiently than their 32-bit counterparts. Second, desktop apps are downloaded from several other sources apart from the MacOS App Store.
