Karnataka poll schedule was not leaked: EC Committee

BJP president Amit Shah on Friday termed reports of Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah planning to shift his constituency for the May 12 Assembly polls as evidence of BJP's impending victory in the southern state.

The All India Majlis-e Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has not yet decided whether or not it will contest the Karnataka Assembly elections scheduled to be held next month.

With growing clamour among many leaders to contest from two segments, the party has made a decision to reject all proposals and will give an opportunity to other leaders to contest the elections, top sources in the Congress leaderhsip told Deccan Herald. In 2013 he had defeated MG Mamadapur of JD (S) by 15,113 votes. The difference of vote share between Congress and BJP is just 2 percent and this can play a big role in the elections as even the minor vote swing from one party to other may lead to big change in the final tally. The party will decide whether to field JD (S) rebel and sitting MLA Akhanda Srinivasmurthy or former Congress MLA Prasanna Kumar from Pulakeshinagar, sources said. In 2008, BJP's MK Pattanshetty had won from the seat.

Forming an electoral alliance with BSP, JD (S) is strengthening its base among Dalit and backward communities in the state.

There is a possibility of releasing candidates for about 136 constituencies out of 224 in the state, the sources said.

The opinion poll claimed that the Congress is likely to bag 37% votes against 36.59% it polled in the 2013 elections.

An overwhelming 45% of those surveyed believe that the Congress should be given a second chance. On the other side, Asaduddin Owaisi's AIMIM and SDPI (Social Democratic Party of India) - parties which mainly bank on Muslim support, also have announced that they will contest in these elections separately.

The opinion poll also predicts that the HD Deve Gowda's Janata Dal (Secular) will be in the position of kingmaker in Karnataka.

"Historically, media has speculated the schedules of elections in the past". The party contested the last Bengaluru municipal elections, but it did not manage to win any seats.

The BJP had also denied speculations of any understanding with the JD (S).
