John Oliver offers Russel Crowe's jockstrap to Anchorage Blockbuster

Oliver discussed the threat to the last Blockbuster store on the show before revealing his purchases. "But if they are going to give it to us a blockbuster video in Alaska ..."

A few weeks ago on his show, Oliver had noted the actor was about to hold an The Art of Divorce auction to celebrate the end of his marriage, putting up for bidding various artifacts from his movie career.

"If we do not hear from you in the next two days, I know a transportation museum in Scranton, Pennsylvania that could make room for a new exhibit", Oliver said.

It started weeks ago on Oliver's show, when he reported the odd celebrity auction Crowe would be holding to sell a number of choice pieces of memorabilia, including the fated jockstrap. Numerous items up for sale raised eyebrows, particular the leather jockstrap that he wore in "Cinderella Man", the Ron Howard-helmed movie about a boxer in the 1930s.

The show also bought a pair of shorts and a robe from the same film, as well as a hood Crowe wore in Robin Hood, a vest from Les Miserables, and more.

"To the manager at the only remaining Blockbuster in Anchorage, Alaska, all of this s-- is yours", Oliver said.

All the Anchorage Blockbuster has to do is contact Last Week Tonight within 48 hours to claim the items!

"There has been some speculation out there that we were the ones who bought that jockstrap, and I will admit that it does sound like something we would do", Oliver said.

"It was my jock strap when I won the heavyweight championship of the world as the character James J. Braddock in the film 'Cinderella Man, '" Crowe told Good Morning Britain.

Note: Video contains explicit language not suitable for younger audiences. "I put it in the collection as a piece of whimsy and a bit of a gag".
