Jaguar Land Rover to cut 1000 jobs at Solihull

Jaguar Land Rover to cut 1000 jobs at Solihull

Less than three months after announcing a temporary cut in production at its Halewood plant, Jaguar Land Rover is to announce cuts to temporary roles in one of its British plants in the face of "continuing headwinds", facing the vehicle industry. The jobs will be lost from the Solihull and Castle Bromwich factory sites. The factory employs 10,000 workers, including 2,000 contract staff.

JLR, a unit of India's Tata Motors Ltd., will formally announce the cuts on April 16 when it reveals production plans for the 2018-2019 fiscal year to workers, according to an emailed statement on April 13.

Growth was driven by a 19.9 per cent hike in the Chinese market, while sales in North America and other overseas territories were up by 4.7 per cent and 3.4 per cent respectively.

This was despite the firm recording its best year to date in 2017, with 6.2 lakh units sold. But while global sales boomed, United Kingdom sales fell 15.8% because of weakening consumer confidence.

The company is not renewing the contracts of several agency staff and will be informing staff of plans for the next financial year on Monday. Consumer confidence in the United Kingdom had also been hit by uncertainty over Brexit.

'The downturn in demand for diesel-powered vehicles will have also played a key role in this decision.

"In light of the continuing headwinds impacting the auto industry, we are making some adjustments to our production schedules and the level of agency staff", the company said.

'We are however continuing to recruit large numbers of highly skilled engineers, graduates and apprentices as we are over-proportionally invested in new products and technologies.

The auto giant has cited "continuing headwinds" impacting the vehicle industry for the decision. Sales of new cars in the United Kingdom plunged in March as uncertainty weighed on demand and buyers turned their backs on diesel, extending the run of falling sales to 12 months.

When asked in March if there could be further production cuts at the carmaker's United Kingdom plants, Mr Speth told Ian King: "It's quite clear that if there's no demand, then we have to adapt our production levels".
