Family of driver killed in Tesla crash hires law firm

The agreement was in effect for a fatal Tesla Autopilot crash in California in March. "The crash happened on a clear day with several hundred feet of visibility ahead, which means that the only way for this accident to have occurred is if Mr. Huang was not paying attention to the road, despite the auto providing multiple warnings to do so".

"I find it shocking", Cathy Chase, president of the group Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, said by phone. "That's not the only way".

The family of the Apple engineer who died in a Tesla auto crash closing month reportedly has employed a laws company to "uncover approved decisions", after believing that the carmaker's faulty know-how is what led to his lack of life.

Tesla still believes that Autopilot will continue to improve and eventually morph to true autonomy, as opposed to its current status as a semi-autonomous driver aid. The U.S. agency is in the midst of two active investigations into Autopilot-related crashes.

The family has talked about thus far that the auto was taken to the dealership earlier to the crash on account of points with the autopilot attribute.

"Tesla's response is reflective of its ongoing strategy of doubling down on the explicit warnings it has given to drivers on how to use, and not use, the system", said Mike Ramsey, an analyst at Gartner Inc. Chief Executive Officer Dennis Muilenburg lauded the energy and investment that billionaires Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk are spurring in aerospace, but threw a playful jab to underscore the company's "steady Eddie" reputation and deep roots in space exploration. Huang's hands were "not detected on the wheel for six seconds prior to the collision", Tesla said in the blog. It's also refused to comment on how many alerts can be ignored before the system disengages, what version of Autopilot software was in Huang's Model X, or when the vehicle was built. Just about a year ago, Tesla was hit with a lawsuit from a customer who claimed that Tesla was using drivers as "beta testers of half-baked software that renders Tesla vehicles risky".

The NTSB release says it took this action of removing Tesla from the Model X crash investigation (see Model X post crash video) "because Tesla violated the party agreement by releasing investigative information before it was vetted and confirmed by the NTSB". Autopilot issues visual and audio alerts if the driver's hands leave the steering wheel for a period of time.

As a reminder here, Tesla's Autopilot system is only meant to be used by those closely watching the road, and activating the system requires an acknowledgment of this reality. The system is supposed to disengage after several warnings.

Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) last released its quarterly earnings results on Wednesday, February 7th. Fiery Tesla crash kills driver in Mountain View Despite his long hours at EA Games and then Apple starting last November, 38-year-old Walter Huang found time for his family.

Huang's family said on Wednesday it had hired law firm Minami Tamaki LLP to explore legal options, adding the firm believed the Autopilot feature probably caused his death. The San Francisco-based law firm declined to comment on Tesla's statement.

The National Transportation Safety Board said Thursday that it removed Tesla as a direct participant in the agency's investigation of the March 23 crash in California. "The reason that other families are not on TV is because their loved ones are still alive".

The NTSB has three pending probes into Tesla crashes.
