BBC News Coverage Of Ant McPartlin's Court Hearing Interrupted By Car Crash

The 42-year-old was fined £86,000 and given a 20-month driving ban after he pleaded guilty to drink driving.

Wearing a black three-piece suit, white shirt and black tie, McPartlin listened intently and nodded in the dock as the case against him was outlined.

McPartlin's vehicle "came to a halt and was no longer driveable due to the damage caused" she said.

Walker added: "He hopes that in time he can make himself better and that he might be forgiven by all of the many people he knows and he feels he has let down terribly".

His mother was in the auto with him at the time of the crash and the barrister told the district judge the incident was down to "a brief relapse unbeknownst to his passenger".

District Judge told McPartlin: "You were a man of good character...you have lost that good character".

Mr McPartlin failed a roadside breathalyser test and was subsequently brought to a police station where he was interviewed under caution.

The driver, named as Dr NG, said: "I am horrified how someone can drive so dangerously".

His appearance in court comes after one of his friends told The Sun: "He knows he has to face the music".

In court, a letter was read out in which the presenter stated that was "ashamed and mortified" about the auto crash, and accepted full responsibility for what had happened. "I'm ashamed and mortified that this happened".

McPartlin's fine works out to about 4.5 days' pay. Higher standards are expected of me, I expect them of myself. I let a lot of people down and for that I'm truly sorry'.

"I'd like to apologise to everyone involved in the crash and I'm just thankful no-one was seriously hurt".

Of the accident, the Metropolitan Police said one of the passengers of the cars was a child, The Guardian reported.

After McPartlin, of Chiswick, west London, was charged, ITV announced the Saturday Night Takeaway host would step back from his TV commitments, with co-presenter Declan Donnelly presenting the final two episodes of the show on his own.

At the time a statement from McPartlin's publicist added: "Ant has chose to go back into treatment and step down from his current TV commitments".

It's also been confirmed that Dec will be presenting Britain's Got Talent alone when the live shows air later this year - although Ant will still feature in its pre-recorded auditions.
