You'll soon be able to upgrade from Windows 10 S for free

Reports are coming in that Windows 10 systems running an earlier feature version of the operating system are upgraded to Windows 10 version 1709 forcefully in some circumstances.

We hope this new approach will simplify and make it possible for more customers to start using Windows in S mode: a familiar, productive Windows experience that is streamlined for security and performance across all our editions.

Windows 10 S mode will arrive with the next update to Windows 10.

Last year, Microsoft launched Windows 10 S, a new version of the Windows 10 operating system that's designed specifically for schools and businesses.

Since releasing Windows 10 in July 2015, Microsoft has been criticized for the amount of data the operating system collects about users and sends back to the company for analysis.

Redstone 4/Spring Creators Update is due to be finalized this month and begin rolling out to mainstream users in April 2018.
