Winter Paralympics open in cheery mood

South Korean President Moon Jae-in officially declared open the Winter Paralympic Games here this evening after a vibrant and colourful ceremony that emphasised passion and co-existence, Inside the Games reports.

Yesterday the opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games in Pyeongchang took place.

The Paralympics, which follows last month's Winter Olympic Games, will be held in PyeongChang and neighboring cities Gangneung and Jeongseon through March 18. The USA has the biggest team at the Winter Paralympics with 69 athletes.

Despite the rift, South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported that the North Koreans were cheered when they entered the arena at the Paralympics opening ceremony on Friday.

It was the Slovakian's sixth Paralympic gold in vision impaired skiing.

The original Paralympic competitions started more than 100 years ago, according to Paralympic.org, with the first sport clubs for deaf athletes in Berlin dating back to 1888.

Sin's bronze was South Korea's first medal at the PyeongChang Paralympics, which kicked off 10-day campaign on Friday.

"[North Korea] does not accept the fact that Dokdo can not be marked due to political issues held in Korea", read a statement from the Korea Paralympic Committee.

American snowboarder Brenna Huckaby, who lost her right leg below the knee, made headlines when she featured in Sports Illustrated's swimsuit issue.

The two Korean nations agreed to "respect each other's stance and march separately" following the flag disagreement, BBC reported.

Parsons said International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach will be in attendance at Friday's opening ceremony.

The North Korean delegation, however, received one of the largest cheers from the crowd - some spectators carried the blue unified Korean flag used at the Olympics' opening ceremony.

But the disagreement is considered a minor sticking point after what has been a swift thaw between the neighbours, starting with North Korea's decision in January to participate in the Olympics.
