We should have a new force called the Space Force

As part of his first presidential visit to California, President Trump addressed members of the military at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego Tuesday evening.

"The comic adventures that befall a crew of astronauts assigned to a remote military space station", IMDb notes of Space Force. He then suggested the USA might have to start a "Space Force", which was met with chuckles from the audience.

The military space program has mostly been led by the Air Force. "It's like the Army and the Navy, but for space, because we're spending a lot of money on space".

Many in the military are resistant to the idea of a new space arm, with chief of US Strategic Command, Air Force General John Hyten, suggesting last November that while reform to eliminate bureaucracy is necessary to stay ahead of the Russians and Chinese, the idea of a Space Corps is wholly unnecessary. That's about the timing I think you would need when you get the need for a Space Corps.

After Trump renewed the "space force" proposal, Twitter completely roasted him.

Initially, Trump explained, he'd proposed the idea as a joke. "And I was not really serious, and then I said what a great idea, maybe we'll have to do that".

Republican congressman Mike Rogers, who proposed the idea, argued that the Air Force was prioritising its fighter jets over space, and a dedicated service was needed to stay ahead of China and Russian Federation in what was described as the next frontier of warfare. The goal was for the United States to stay ahead of rivals like Russian Federation and China, which are advancing in space-related military operations. However, the bill does leave the door open to a future space-related branch, The Hill reports, by requiring the Secretary of Defense to study the possibility of creating a space-related military branch someday.

"Very soon we're going to Mars", Mr Trump said.

It's not entirely clear what he means by "develop another one".
