Roger Federer leading Federico Delbonis at Indian Wells when rain forces delay

Holder Roger Federer avoided the same fate as Djokovic, though the Swiss top seed was pushed by left-handed Argentine Federico Delbonis in a match that was completed on Sunday after being halted by rain at 2-2 in the second set the previous day.

Novak Djokovic lost on his return to competitive tennis to Taro Daniel in the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells.

The 7-6 (7-3) 4-6 6-1 loss resulted in a quick exit from a tournament the Serbian has won five times.

Verdasco's first serve proved almost unplayable in the deciding set of the second round match as he improved his career head-to-head record against Dimitrov to 2-2.

In just his second tournament since Wimbledon previous year - his first comeback at the Australian Open in January saw him lose in the fourth round to Hyeon Chung before he made a decision to go under the knife for a "small medical intervention" - Djokovic looked well below his best as he went down 7-6 (7-3) 4-6 6-1 to a man ranked 109 in the world.

Federer took the world No 1 spot off Nadal by winning the Rotterdam Open last month. He had surgery in Switzerland shortly after that.

"I was grateful to be out on the court after surgery that quickly but at the same time just didn't feel good at all".

"I never sit down with Rafa and say "let's put it on the line and talk about who is the best of all time", Federer said. "The surface doesn't react so much".

Gael Monfils upset No. 15 seed and 2012 runner-up John Isner 6-7 (5), 7-6 (3), 7-5.

"It feels insane. I mean, I'm still in shock", Anisimova said.

The Indian Bhambri will meet 18th-seeded Sam Querrey in the third round after the big-serving American accounted for Germany's Mischa Zverev 6-4 7-5. I always love to play.

Grigor Dimitrov will not be in round three after the third seed fell to Spanish veteran Fernando Verdasco 7-6 (7/4) 4-6 6-3.

The tournament also lost Japan's Kei Nishikori, who withdrew through illness.
