President Trump hails GOP candidate in special PA election

On the other side of the aisle, Lamb has raised almost $3.5 million since January for his campaign directly, and outside groups backing him have spent only about $1.7 million in the race so far.

Lamb, a former federal prosecutor, is running as a centrist Democrat. The average of polls taken since February 12th suggests that Mr Lamb is running two percentage points behind Mr Saccone. He will not back Nancy Pelosi for House Democratic leader.

Lamb keeps to party orthodoxy on unions.

A lackluster performance, on the other hand, could reveal the limits of Moulton's ability to sway voters in conservative districts and tap into anti-Trump energy.

Except that it is more like he said the Denver Broncos were illegal and he picked up no votes in Tallahassee, because Tallahassee isn't really that anxious about the Broncos.

During a recent campaign speech, Moulton said Lamb should go to Washington because he's willing to take on members of his own party who "just aren't getting it done".

"He puts his money where his mouth his", Lamb said about Moulton. The new 17th includes just 20 percent of the people who live in the current 18th, though it would include Lamb's home and is more friendly to Democrats. He was an early supporter of the president who called himself "Trump before Trump was Trump".

Republicans are preemptively trashing Saccone, the GOP nominee, in an effort to blame any possible loss on the candidate versus the party itself, especially in light of Trump's poor approval ratings.

He even traveled to the state Saturday to hold a raucous campaign-style rally, at which he mused on topics including giving drug dealers the death penalty, Celebrity Apprentice ratings, and the supposed attractiveness of his younger self.

Given the size of the president's 2016 majority, Saccone can afford to lose some of Trump's base.

President Donald Trump won PA-18 by 19 points over Hillary Clinton in November 2016. At a campaign rally with Trump over the weekend, he tried to rouse enough of them to win.

In order to make up the 20 point differential from 2016, Lamb would likely need to outperform Clinton in nearly every type of district, not only doing better than Clinton did against Trump in the bluest areas but also doing significantly better in the reddest areas and breaking near even with the Republican in the more moderate, average parts of the district where Trump in 2016 won by around 20-21 points.

But while both sides have decided that the race is worth digging deep into their pocketbooks, the fact remains that, unlike Virginia and part of Georgia where candidates also went head to head a year ago, this area in Pennsylvania voted solidly and overwhelmingly Republican in 2016. Like many special elections, the race is being closely monitored for clues about what it could mean for the upcoming midterm elections.

Recent polls have shown either candidate in the lead. "It's clear people want an alternative to Trump".

"Lamb will always vote for Pelosi and Dems...." "But if he comes within a shot, he'll look like a genius for predicting what's ahead and that he'll be out in front of the new generation". On March 6th Joe Biden, the popular former vice-president, led a gathering of more than 700 at the Robert Morris University campus in Moon township to give Mr Lamb a boost.

Saccone, for his part, has decided that embracing Trump wholeheartedly is his best political strategy.

Mr Saccone is a portly 60-year-old, who is also a veteran, and has been a state representative since 2011. He also has a military background, having served in the Air Force. Meanwhile, smaller towns in the sprawling district that were once solidly Democratic do not share in Pittsburgh's hip blend of craft brews, tapas joints and "bicycle culture", nor the bounty they represent.

If he loses, it could foreshadow what is already expected to be a hard midterm election cycle for Republicans.

Republicans have been hoping that the passage of their massive tax cuts and the climbing stock market numbers would help override some of Trump's low popularity numbers. In fact, images of Pelosi, that bogeywoman of the right, her mouth pinched, her visage darkened, are featured in most GOP anti-Lamb spots. McDaniel also demeaned Lamb as a Republican in disguise.

"You think her life is so easy folks", he said.

Coming off a packed rally for him by the President on Saturday night, Saccone says he's feeling good even if some polls show him a few points behind.
