Only Vikings, Jets have shown interest in Cousins so far

The New Orleans Saints haven't yet locked up free-agent QB Drew Brees, but they're working behind the scenes to bring back Brees' most risky pass catcher from 2011-14 for a second go-around.

While acquiring Brees would make Minnesota an instant contender for at least a season or two, it would be absolutely shocking to see the 39-year-old quarterback leave the New Orleans Saints.

In his career, Brees has thrown for more than 70,000 yards and almost 500 touchdowns. The team expressed the same sentiment.

But we've reached the point on the clock where simply chalking up Brees' Saints return as a fait accompli is a unsafe proposition. "I didn't think this was going to last through my first August, let alone 12 years". Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs represent one of the best, if not the best, wide receiver duo in all of football, which would undoubtedly be of interest to Brees if he and the Vikings engage in negotiations. Per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the Vikings did that on Monday - and they weren't only team to do so. But why should Brees settle for that little? His accuracy and anticipation in the team's playoff win over Carolina was breathtaking. If Jimmy Garoppolo and Matthew Stafford are worth more than $27 million in annual pay, isn't Brees worth that much on a short-term deal? If the Saints and Brees haven't agreed on a deal by Monday afternoon, it could get wild.

That brings us back to the Vikings, who likely made their call to Brees on Monday as a matter of due diligence.

When it finally does get done, chances are Brees' contract will look an very bad lot like that last extension he signed just four days before the 2016 season opener. But it couldn't hurt to throw out an offer.

And presumably Brees would want that, too, since he doesn't want to put the Saints in a bad financial position as they chase another Super Bowl together.

Until Brees signs on the dotted line, he's fair game for other teams.

It's not like the Saints truly have options.
