Kansas cheerleaders among thousands possibly exposed to mumps at Dallas competition

- Thousands of athletes, coaches and parents were possibly exposed to mumps at a national cheerleading competition that was held last month in Dallas.

In the wake of discovering that somebody with the sickness had gone to the National Cheerleaders Association All-Star National Championship, health officials sent a letter cautioning about conceivable presentation, a representative for the Department of State Health Services, Chris Van Deusen, disclosed to The Washington Post.

Following the discovery, the department sent out letters to the parents of the children who participated in the competition held from February 23 to February 25.

Mumps is an infectious infection that makes the salivary organs in the face end up swollen, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Mumps is spread through saliva and respiratory droplets created when a person sick with mumps coughs and sneezes.

The MMR vaccine, which protects against measles, mumps, and rubella, is given during childhood, although it's not foolproof. Many traveled from out-of-state.

"If you, your child, or any other individuals linked to this event experience or have experienced mumps symptoms, please contact your healthcare provider and inform them of your exposure to mumps", Antonio Aragon, a state health official, wrote in the letter.

No residents in Texas have been reported with the disease as of Tuesday, according to the Dallas News. Many people do not have any symptoms.

In January, at least 130 people across 25 states reported having the mumps.

"Before the USA mumps vaccination program started in 1967, mumps was a universal disease of childhood", the CDC points out on its website. MMR vaccine is not recommended for children less than 1 year of age.

Most of those infected with the virus, without complications, typically recover within two weeks. It also can be spread through shared utensils.
