Iowa state senator Bill Dix caught kissing lobbyist in bar

Iowa Starting Line reported the unidentified woman in the video "has been registered and works as a lobbyist for various municipality groups at the Statehouse for the past two years".

Republicans in the GOP-controlled chamber plan to elect a new majority leader on Wednesday.

The video shows Republican Bill Dix kissing the unidentified lobbyist.

Witnesses told the website that they recognized Dix - who is married with three children - from recent news of a $1.75 million settlement reached with a former communication staffer for the Iowa Senate Republicans who claimed she was sacked in 2013 over her sexual harassment claims.

"Senate Majority Leader Bill Dix announced his resignation, as Majority Leader and State Senator, effective at 2 pm today, March 12, 2018".

A prominent politician in the USA state of Iowa has resigned after he was caught appearing to kiss a lobbyist in a bar down the road from the State Capitol.

Senate Democrats had earlier released a statement calling it a "serious matter" and accused Dix of failing to take responsibility after a former Senate staffer filed a lawsuit claiming sexual misconduct in the workplace.

"Iowans hold their elected officials to a high standard; they expect us to lead", said Reynolds. She did not respond to a request for comment from The Associated Press.

Dix has maintained the ex-staffer was sacked for poor performance.

Dix had already been widely criticized by members of his own party for his handling of the sexual harassment problem in the Senate Republican caucus uncovered by a lawsuit brought by a former staffer.

Shortly after, Dix drew criticism for backtracking from a joint announcement with the Iowa House Republicans that both chambers would hire a human resources director who would as, part of the position's duties, handle sexual harassment complaints.
