Donald Trump Dumps Rex Tillerson

In 2017, Pompeo openly advocated for regime change in Pyongyang saying: "I am hopeful we will find a way to separate the [North Korean] regime from this system..."

"Tillerson was probably the least effective and probably the most disliked within his own agency of any modern Secretary of State", he says. "If you look at the Iran deal I think it's awful and I guess he thought it was OK ..." I guess he thought it was OK.

Close ally Australia, which is working through an exemption from the United States tariffs, welcomed Pompeo's appointment. "Both South Korea and the USA shared the view that maintaining strong cooperation is. necessary despite the personnel reshuffle in the U.S., as there are important pending issues between the two countries", the South Korean Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

And, the president said, "I think Rex will be much happier now".

"Pompeo was a hawk on Iran".

Senate Democrats - and some top Republicans - are slow-walking the process amid fresh questions over the Trump administration's stance toward Russian Federation and revived inquiries into the CIA's dark history of torture.

Pompeo has shown no indication that those tough stances, whether accurate or not, will change if he becomes secretary of state.

"Firing a Secretary of State by Twitter may make for great drama and instant TV ratings, but this, and countless other instances like this, produce undiluted instability that damages the nation and the office of the presidency at just about every level", Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy said in a statement. They elected Trump. With Tillerson gone and Pompeo at State, McMaster will now have an ally at State who shares his belief that for Trump's warnings to North Korea to be credible, he must have well-developed and credible military options on the table.

Yet supporters of engagement with Iran shouldn't give up hope. Were Tillerson's recent critical comments on North Korea and Russian Federation, that were out of sync with Trump, the final straw? "Tillerson didn't agree with breaking the Iran deal". Before leaving on a trip to California, he spoke openly of their differences as he explained the rationale for the latest departure from his chaotic White House. The most pressing concern in geopolitics today is keeping nuclear weapons out of the hands of evil regimes. Meanwhile, Mr Trump's intention to renounce the Iran nuclear deal negotiated by the previous administration will not inspire confidence in the North Koreans that Washington can be trusted to keep its word, but probably they have no illusions on that score.

Tillerson had been widely criticized for an aloof management style, which had alienated droves of career diplomats and driven numerous agency's senior brass into early retirements.

"Pompeo is very interested in waging a war similar to the Iraq war by citing worldwide regulations", Khorram wrote.

Burns and others think that leaving the deal now would further strain US relations with Europe, isolate America internationally and ultimately run counter to American interests. What about Tehran's continued practice of taking American citizens hostage? "Ominously, Pompeo's appointment may have made military action in Asia by the United States more likely in the future".

In Pompeo, the diplomats and civil servants who make up the 70,000-strong department may now encounter the opposite: a fiercely partisan veteran of some of the most bitter battles in Congress while he was a House Republican, and someone willing to jeopardize his reputation to defend Trump.

Such an opening, though, would look drastically different than the Obama administration's approach to dealing with the Islamic republic, which was one of "carrots and sticks". The move has some grim implications for the U.S.' approach towards Iran in the months ahead. The other world powers are in agreement that engaging Iran is the best of those options.
