Celtics' Smart out indefinitely with thumb injury

The Celtics have succeeded this season despite some notable injuries.

The Celtics thus wait for news of whether their valuable stopper will play again this season. Smart had his thumb taped up and returned to finish the game.

"(They're) waiting for that second opinion", the source said yesterday.

Smart was seen wearing a protective cast on his shooting hand after the 99-97 loss to the Indiana Pacers.

Theis was already ruled out for the season after undergoing surgery to fix a torn left meniscus, while Hayward, who is recovering from ankle and knee injuries has expressed optimism for a return while coach Brad Stevens and president Danny Ainge have played the cautious side, saying he won't return this season.

It's been a tumultuous season for the impending restricted free agent, who was unable to reach agreement on a contract extension with the team last fall.

"Sore, but it will be all right", Smart told reporters after the game.

This injury is to the same thumb Smart injured when he punched a wall at an L.A. hotel in January, which forced Smart to miss 11 games.

Theis and Smart were both hurt in Sunday's game, with Smart's injury occurring when he dove to the floor.

Smart is one of Boston's best defenders, and always seems to make a key play whenever the Celtics need it most. All have been listed as inactive. Al Horford is also considered questionable.
