Broncos hope Case Keenum can repeat this Jake Plummer stat

Broncos hope Case Keenum can repeat this Jake Plummer stat

In Kansas City, Patrick Mahomes is unproven (his Week 17 start against the Broncos last season was his lone appearance of the year), but the Chiefs are clearly building around him following the trade that sent Smith to Washington.

After being supplanted by top draft pick Jared Goff in Los Angeles in 2016, Keenum landed in Minnesota. Taking over as the Vikings' signal caller from the (always) injured Sam Bradford, he led the men in purple to a sterling 11-3 mark.

Denver will most likely take the best available defensive player at No. 6 then look to free agency to add to the O-line so Keenum isn't running for his life and/or scraping himself off the turn 10-15 times a game this season.

The addition of Keenum moves the Broncos immediately from the absolute bottom of the AFC West to contending for the division.

The Broncos also considered Kirk Cousins and had some discussions about Teddy Bridgewater, who was a teammate of Keenum's this past season with the Minnesota Vikings. In the playoffs, he completed a miracle pass to receiver Taye Diggs to push Minnesota past the New Orleans Saints and into the National Football League title game, where they were annihilated by the future Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles 38-7.

As we explained here, it makes sense that the Vikings would be the favorite, because they give Cousins the best chance to do what he wants to do - win now.

Or as Elway put it at the scouting combine: "I didn't say it".

He also threw a touchdown on the last play of the game to Stefon Diggs to stun the New Orleans Saints in the divisional round of the playoffs.

"There were some things we should have done differently that we didn't do".

The first domino has fallen in the 2018 free agent quarterback race.

As much as I like Case Keenum, and as much as I like the quarterbacks in this year's draft class, I don't really like the idea of one of them sitting on the bench for the Broncos.

Keenum's arrival means Paxton Lynch is expected to return as a backup with competition from Chad Kelly and a potential draft choice - that has not been ruled out - as Denver plans on trading Trevor Siemian. The place I bought my last two cars has delivered zero Super Bowls to my team so far so probably not going back there.
