Aung San Suu Kyi cancels Sydney speaking event, 'not feeling well'

Despite facing widespread worldwide condemnation, Suu Kyi was welcomed to Parliament House in Canberra today by a 19-gun salute. They reportedly chanted "go home Aung San Suu Kyi".

Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi spoke at length about her country's troubled western state of Rakhine at a Sydney conference on Sunday and appealed to Southeast Asian neighbors for help, Australia's prime minister said.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's spokesman, Zaw Htay, was not immediately available for comment on Turnbull's comments.

Australia's attorney general on Saturday rejected a private bid by activist lawyers to have Suu Kyi face charges for crimes against humanity, saying she has diplomatic immunity.

Many in Myanmar refer to the Rohingya as Bengalis and insist they are immigrants from Bangladesh.

At least 700,000 Rohingya have fled Rakhine to neighboring Bangladesh since August a year ago when militants from the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army attacked 25 police and army posts, killing about a dozen security officials.

Her government has been accused internationally of "ethnic cleansing" against Myanmar's Muslim Rohingya population, at least 688,000 of whom have fled to neighbouring Bangladesh since August.

"All of this happened because of ARSA".

Asean and Australia are doing their best to help Myanmar re-establish stability and tranquillity in its Rakhine state, while keeping an eye on whether the crisis would pose a security threat to the region. "The government did nothing", he said in response to a question about the legal move.

"(But) Ms Suu Kyi is the de facto leader and as such she has an important role to play in ensuring accountability for abuses".

Suu Kyi has been criticised by large swathes of the global community for failing to protect the Rohingya - who are considered by the majority of Myanmar citizens as illegal "Bengali" immigrants and denied citizenship by the government - and for refusing to condemn the military amid mounting evidence that it has indiscriminately killed, raped and tortured innocent civilians, and burnt down entire villages.

"Those who are putting pressure like this need to be careful that doesn't become encouraging terrorists".

Suu Kyi's global image has since taken a battering.

The humanitarian crisis was one of the key topics at a three-day special summit between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Australia.

Australia hosted the meetings, despite not being a member of the 10-nation bloc, as it seeks to tighten political and trade ties in the region amid China's rising influence.

In the days leading up to the summit, the Australian government was urged by rights groups to condemn Suu Kyi for her country's persecution of the Rohingya. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull reportedly discussed ending the crisis and Australia's humanitarian assistance to displaced Rohingya with Suu Kyi, as well as economic development and education in Burma.
