Women Dead, 3 Officers Shot in Detroit Standoff

Police believe the gunman is also responsible for killing two women and injuring a man.

Detroit police say the standoff began around 10:30 Sunday night in the house on the city's east side after two women were fatally shot during an apparent argument.

The "dangerous" standoff came to an end on Monday when police made entry into Smith's home through robots and found the suspect dead inside, police said, adding that they believe he took his own life.

The suspect "is not going down without a fight", Williams said. He also had seven guns registered under his name as a MI concealed pistol license holder. Authorities state Smith had no criminal history and had not had contact with police.

According to Chief Craig, the Detroit police officers never returned fire because they didn't know where the shots were coming from.

A male inside the house was also shot but survived.

Craig said that all officers were shot in the leg. Craig said it is possible he could be dead inside. Craig said about nine of his responding officers were pinned down by gunfire for about an hour.

The officer that was shot is in stable condition.

What started the shooting is unclear, according to Craig.

The gunman retreated to the home when police arrived and remains there - occasionally firing shots.

The shooting comes just over a week after the Detroit Police Department mourned the loss of Officer Glenn Doss Jr., who was shot by a barricaded gunman while responding to a domestic violence call on January 24. They've been used in past Detroit-area barricaded-gunman standoff situationsto determine whether the suspect had committed suicide or still posed a threat.

The suspect, in that case, Decharlos O. Brooks, has been charged with eight counts of assault with intent to murder, seven counts of resisting and obstructing, one count of carrying a risky weapon and 17 counts of felony firearm, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Officer.
