Tiger Woods aims to reverse Riviera fortunes

The 14-time major victor makes his second PGA Tour appearance since a spinal fusion operation in a star-studded field at Riviera Country Club - the venue where he made his tour debut as an amateur in 1992.

"It's winning time", says Tiger Woods as he prepares to compete at the Genesis Open at Riviera, California.

It was en route across the country when the 24-year-old Thomas - the reigning PGA Tour Player of the Year and one of Woods' South Florida neighbors - asked Woods when the first time was he played the tournament at iconic Riviera.

Woods finished joint 23rd at Torrey Pines and the way he got around the course was encouraging, especially considering he missed the cut at the same event in 2017 when his back betrayed him and then withdrew after one round the next week in Dubai and was out until December.

"I'd like to eventually win tournaments again but right now I'm going through the process to get to that point", Woods said, as quoted by the Daily Mail. But as a PGA Tour professional, Woods has conspicuously avoided Riviera. Live coverage begins on Thursday from 2.30pm on Sky Sports Golf and 4pm on Sky Sports Main Event.

Johnson tops the betting at 5/1, which is no surprise considering the American came top of the pile previous year, and was runner-up in each of the 2014 and 2015 editions.

"I've been away from the game a pretty long time", he said. The more tournaments I play in, the more I'll be able to get a better understanding of that.

He also acknowledged last week that Riviera is "a ideal course" for those that are striking it well.

It's his second PGA Tour event in his latest comeback bid since returning from a 9-month layoff. And he's got the bad memory of a year ago at Riviera, where he was in contention early in the final round before fading to a 75.

"It'd be a great sign if I do play", Woods told reporters at Riviera, "And I think it'd be a smart sign if I don't play". "Be able to go at it full bore again", Woods said. Anyone who backs these underdogs could hit it big.

A week after Gary Woodland ended his near five-year wait to get his hands on some silverware at the Phoenix Open, Ted Potter Jr joined the club by landing his first win in six years at the AT&T Pebble Beach.

Woods will play alongside Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas in the opening two rounds, at a course where he has never won, despite playing at Riviera regularly while he was growing up.

"But he's obviously gotten much better, worked on his game and won tournaments while I've been out". With top-20 finishes in 12 of his last 13 global starts, he's due.

Rory McIlroy: He will be looking to bounce back from last week in Monterey. "For some reason, I just don't play it well". A lot of that is me because I got hurt and didn't play. Put it all together and it should translate into success at Riviera - but putting holds him back.

Alex Noren, who lost in a playoff to Jason Day at Torrey Pines looks poised for another good finish, and Thomas Pieters returns after finishing t-2 here past year.

Past year rain and fog meant that many players had to compete 36-holes on Sunday.
