The Buzz | Oxfam's deputy chief executive resigns in Haiti scandal

Ms Mordaunt is due to give a speech to representatives from worldwide aid agencies and ministers from over 20 countries at the Agenda 2030 for Children: End Violence Solutions Summit.

Ms. Bibeau said she received assurances from Oxfam Canada and Oxfam Quebec - which operate separately - that Canadian taxpayer dollars did not fund any projects linked to the sexual misconduct allegations. All I can say is that we are working to rebuild that trust.

On Monday Oxfam's deputy chief executive Penny Lawrence resigned over the scandal, saying she took full responsibility for what had happened under her watch, while apologising for the "harm and distress" caused.

On Monday, the European Union ordered Oxfam to explain itself over a 2011 prostitution scandal in Haiti, warning charities that the bloc would cut their funding if they breached ethical standards.

Oxfam received £31.7 million (35.7 million euros, $43.8 million) from state coffers past year.

Oxfam now faces a battle to prevent other high-profile ambassadors from stepping down as well as making sure the United Kingdom government does not withdraw the £32 million (Dh163m) of funds it receives.

The latest revelations by Helen Evans, former global head of safeguarding, heaped pressure on chief executive Mark Goldring just hours after his deputy resigned over a scandal involving aid workers' use of prostitutes in Haiti and Chad.

The beleaguered organization tweeted a promise to be more open and transparent and said it had "strengthened" protections against abuse and harassment.

"But I don't think it was in anyone's best interest to be describing the details of the behaviour in a way that was actually going to draw extreme attention to it".

"As an organisation, we are ashamed by the actions of some of our staff and are more committed now than ever to learn from our mistakes and ensure we uphold the highest levels of safeguarding standards in our work around the world".

Roland van Hauwermeiren, a 68-year-old native Belgian, became the center of worldwide embarrassment for Oxfam after reports in the last week surfaced allegations of orgies with sex workers in Haiti after its natural disaster and hiring prostitutes in war-torn Chad.

Oxfam told Express.co.uk it expects to see even more reports in the future, before the situation stabilises.

Several of Oxfam's corporate sponsors, including Sainsbury's, Visa, M&S and the Co-op bank, have said they contacted the charity to raise concerns about the claims.

"Women who have to supplement their factory/manual labour with sex work. There are NGOs who do not cover up the egregious abuses of their employees".

Oxfam has issued an "unreserved apology" to the Government, supporters, and the people of Haiti over its handling of the incidents, and has dismissed four staff members.
