Shaun White soars to halfpipe glory

White's gold medal represents a historic 100th Olympic gold for the United States at the Winter Olympics.

An uncharacteristic mistake on his second run allowed the airborne Hirano to nearly literally fly into the lead with a thrilling run for 95.25, meaning the pressure switched back to White to deliver when it mattered most.

The men's snowboard halfpipe event is now being broadcast on NBC. "I knew I did a great ride and I was proud of that and I could walk away with my head high, but when they announced my score and I'd won, it crippled me".

Normally a bit more reserved during the qualifying rounds, White, along with No. 2 Scotty James (Australia) and No. 3 Ayumu Hirano (Japan), continued to one-up each other throughout the second heat. But the athlete then told Guthrie on Today, "I've grown as a person over the years and it's incredible - I mean, you've known me for a long time now - it's fantastic how life works and twists and turns and lessons learned". I had this insane injury in New Zealand (in October) where I busted my face open.

White has now won half of the six Olympic golds ever given out in halfpipe, as the event only made its debut at the 1998 Games in Nagano.

The 31-year old snowboarding legend was sued by Lena Zawaideh, a former drummer in his rock band, Bad Things, who claimed he sexually harassed her and refused to pay her wages after he fired her.

In the last round, with the last run of the final, White managed to pull out a near-perfect run to steal gold.

The last man to go, and with Hirano's second-round score still the one to beat, the man they call the "Flying Tomato" delivered an nearly flawless run at the end of which there was only one possible result.

James, who fell on his final routine, said: "It could have gone either way between first and second". So, honestly, I'm just so happy with my performance.

In January, White scored a flawless 100 when qualifying for the 2018 U.S. Olympic Team.

I watched his run - it was a good run - it had good amplitude and was pretty flawless, ' James said.

"The spirit of competition helps me get my runs accomplished and gets me motivated and I'm just so thankful for today". In the Team USA history book, his three gold medals put him second to short track speedskater Bonnie Blair and long track speedskater Eric Heiden, who holds the record with five apiece.

After winning Olympic gold in Torino and Vancouver, White finished a disappointing fourth in Sochi.

"I definitely didn't mean any disrespect and the flag that's flying on my house right now is way up there", he said.
