White's gold medal represents a historic 100th Olympic gold for the United States at the Winter Olympics.

The last man to go, and with Hirano's second-round score still the one to beat, the man they call the "Flying Tomato" delivered an nearly flawless run at the end of which there was only one possible result.

James, who fell on his final routine, said: "It could have gone either way between first and second". So, honestly, I'm just so happy with my performance.

In January, White scored a flawless 100 when qualifying for the 2018 U.S. Olympic Team.

I watched his run - it was a good run - it had good amplitude and was pretty flawless, ' James said.

"The spirit of competition helps me get my runs accomplished and gets me motivated and I'm just so thankful for today". In the Team USA history book, his three gold medals put him second to short track speedskater Bonnie Blair and long track speedskater Eric Heiden, who holds the record with five apiece.

After winning Olympic gold in Torino and Vancouver, White finished a disappointing fourth in Sochi.

"I definitely didn't mean any disrespect and the flag that's flying on my house right now is way up there", he said.
