Several hospitalized after shooting at NSA gate

Several people were injured during a Wednesday morning shooting at the U.S. National Security Agency headquarters in Fort Meade, Maryland, the agency said.

The statement did not make clear whether the shots had been fired by a suspect or by law enforcement and officials at the NSA and Federal Bureau of Investigation, which is investigating the incident, did not respond to questions about who fired weapons. Nearby, a black SUV with bullet holes through its windshield appeared to have crashed into a concrete barrier at one of the facility's secure vehicle entry gates.

Local fire and police departments had said earlier on Twitter they were responding to a possible shooting incident.

White House deputy press secretary Lindsay Walters said in a statement that President Trump had been briefed on the shooting. Authorities later said they had stolen a auto from a man who picked them up for a party at a motel.

Police surrounded and handcuffed a man after a black SUV ran into a barrier outside the National Security Agency campus while trying to get inside.

In 2015, two men dressed as women tried to ram a stolen vehicle through the gate of the NSA headquarters at Fort Meade. "We will continue to provide updates as they become available", the statement added. The FBI was leading the investigation into the incident.

Anne Arundel County (Maryland) police reported the incident, but say they are not the ones investigating.

This is not the first incident to happen at an NSA security gate.

Route 32 near the base was closed in both directions for about an hour but has since reopened.

In March 2015, one person was killed and another seriously wounded after driving a vehicle up to the NSA's gate, ignoring commands to stop. One driver died at the scene after NSA police opened fire on a stolen sports utility vehicle.
