'Remarkable': Dying US woman's last words were to identify her 'killers'

A 19-year-old woman who was able to name her attackers in her dying breath after she was found beaten and stabbed by a California road was friends with the two people arrested over her death.

Sergeant Ray Kelly said on Tuesday the two people arrested in relation to the stabbing were friends of the victim. "This young woman clung to life when she was left for dead and was able to live for another couple hours and get us that information".

Cuesta was airlifted to a hospital, where she spoke with investigators and identified her suspected killers. But as they tried to save her, investigators asked her questions.

Loadholt told reporters the victim had been so severely stabbed that he could not even determine her hair color.

Stabbed multiple times and left on the side of a road, Lizette Cuesta crawled 100 yards before she was spotted by UPS employees on their way to work around 2am Monday.

'She was fighting to survive and part of that fight was helping us find the people who did this.

"I've been around a long time, and I can only think of two to three times that I'm aware of in our agency that we've been able to get a dying declaration like that", Kelly said.

Daniel Gross, 19, and Melissa Leonardo, 25, who reportedly live together and are engaged, are now being held in Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of murder. "Come to the house, call her to have a drink whatever, coffee, and then do that, it's just disgusting, it's evil".

"Whenever Liz came to this park, 'Oh, there's Liz!' You know, always positive, I would look forward to seeing her", he said. She dragged herself the length of a football field so passing motorists could see her lying there.

'It's very rare that you can get one of these statements and I don't know how descriptive it was but it was descriptive enough to get us to Modesto, ' said Kelly. She said the teen was the oldest of three siblings, and leaves behind a brother and sister, Lopez said. Authorities-who believe Cuesta was at one point tied up-have yet to provide a motive for the killing, and friends are at a loss. A GoFundMe has been set up to help Cuesta's family members.

Ray Cuesta said that, despite her death, he feels like his daughter won the battle against her killers.

"She was a leader, a go getter". She brought peace to herself and peace to me and my family.
