Prince Henrik Of Denmark Died At 83

Prince Henrik of Denmark, the husband of Queen Margrethe II, has passed away at the age of 83, the press service of the Royal Danish House said in a statement on Wednesday.

The prince died "peacefully in his sleep" at the Fredensborg Castle, north of Copenhagen, with Queen Margrethe and their two sons - Crown Prince Frederick and Prince Joachim - at his side.

His eldest son, Crown Prince Frederik, left the Winter Olympics and returned to Denmark to be by his father's side on February 9.

Crown Prince Frederik had rushed from the Winter Olympics in South Korea to be with his father, whose condition has "seriously worsened", the Danish Royal House said in a statement on Friday.

Henrik was diagnosed with dementia in early September last year- shortly after the prince made headlines for behaving out of character.

Henrik, who was unhappy with the title of prince consort and had expressed frustration for not being the social equal to his wife and their son in line to become the Denmark king, was diagnosed with pneumonia at the end of January while he was traveling in Egypt.

In the mid-1980s, Henrik publicly said he wanted a pay cheque instead of relying on the queen, who gets annual allowances. The law was subsequently amended to give him about 10 percent of the annual royal allocation. His family was left anxious when he publicly said he no longer wanted to be buried alongside his wife, Queen Margrethe.

"My wife has not shown me the respect an ordinary wife should show her spouse".

In 2015 he bailed on the Queen's 75th birthday celebrations due to ill health only to be spotted sunning himself in Venice two days later.

"If she wants to bury me with her, she must make me a king consort", he told magazine Se og Hør. But, the queen had previously commissioned a sarcophagus or stone coffin, for the duo, at Roskilde Cathedral in Denmark.

Some politicians dubbed Henrik's behaviour "tiresome", while media had a field day, one television show conferring on him the title of "Whiner of the Year".

Prince Henrik was also known for his thick French accent and his love of food, wine and poetry. "I have been satisfied with that role, but after so many years in Denmark I don't suddenly want to become number three and become some kind of wearisome attachment".
