Out athlete Eric Radford takes home gold in Winter Olympics first

Yahoo News points out Radford and Matthew Mitcham, who won gold in the 10-meter platform at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, are the only out athletes to win gold at the events.

He also took to Instagram, posing with Adam Rippon - the bronze-medal figure skater who is the first openly gay athlete from the USA to compete in the Winter Games.

The sporting world witnessed an important piece of history on Day 3 of the 2018 Olympic Games when Canadian figure skater Eric Radford became the first openly gay male athlete to win Olympic Winter gold.

Rippon, who skated to Coldplay's O, and Arrival of the Birds by Cinematic Orchestra, won bronze in the same event.

"I had never felt compelled to talk about my sexuality before because I believed it was a non-issue", Radford wrote. They took a powerful picture after getting their medals.

Others have congratulated the duo, describing their success as 'absolutely incredible'.

Radford took to social media to celebrate his win.

Radford officially came out in an article in Outsports Magazine in December 2014, nearly a year after helping Canada earn Olympic silver in the same event in Sochi. "I'll be fine.' But I kept it together", he said. I'm happy for him and all the other athletes who worked and trained practically their whole lives to get there.

Adam Rippon - who is also openly gay - was part of an American squad that included: Chris Knierim, Alex Shibutani, Mirai Nagasu, Nathan Chen, Bradie Tennell, Maia Shibutani and Alexa Scimeca Knierim.
