What is happening at your hospital — NHS winter crisis

Its chief executive Chris Hopson said: "If we continue to run the NHS at close to 100% capacity, day in day out, permanently in the red zone, it's not surprising that the service can't cope when we get a high, but entirely predictable, spike in demand".

Campaigning website 38 Degrees, which commissioned the poll, said that when the figure was extrapolated across the country, almost four million adults have already been affected by winter pressures in the NHS.

NHS Providers is also calling for a full review of how well the NHS handled this winter, looking at: adequacy of bed numbers and staffing levels; efficacy of the new national planning approach; adequacy, timing and allocation of extra winter funding; system resilience; process and impact of cancelled elective operations; and the role and availability of primary care and social care, and their involvement in winter planning.

"We made detailed plans for this winter and have opened additional beds across the hospital in anticipation of this increased demand and supported this with increased quality rounds to ensure patients are safe and comfortable".

"We'd like to thank the public for their patience during this hard time and to our staff who have been going above and beyond coping in extreme circumstances".

"It is crucial that patients with complex care needs and flu receive the right care, not simply the fastest".

The emergency lead consultant at Peterborough City Hospital has joined fellow NHS trust consultants in warning the Prime Minister of "intolerable" safety compromises across the country, with patients dying prematurely on corridors.

The letter, leaked to the Health Service Journal, signed by consultants in charge of emergency departments in 68 acute hospitals, acknowledged the best efforts of staff, trusts and clinical commissioning groups.

The consultants draw on their own experiences - including patients dying prematurely, waiting times of 12 hours and more than 50 patients waiting for a hospital bed.

One health board, NHS Lanarkshire, had to ask their office staff to volunteer to clean dirty hospital wards and GP practices.

NHS Forth Valley said it had been dealing with a "significant" increase in the number of patients with flu and other respiratory illnesses in the last few weeks, among other factors.

People are waiting too long in A&E departments because there are no beds for them on wards, and because many of those hospital beds are taken up by patients who are waiting for their social care arrangements.

Answering questions after a speech in south London on Thursday, Mrs May said flu was putting extra pressure on services.

"In winter, that results in the type of rapid deterioration of services that we have seen over recent days". We are also keen to hear from patients.

New data from NHS England shows the health service is operating at a poor level.

'The NHS today has launched their national flu programme and I would encourage people to act on the advice that the NHS is giving and also encourage NHS staff who haven't had the flu vaccine yet to have that vaccine'.

Royal College and the relevant arms length bodies.

The latest figures from Public Health England (PHE) show the number of flu patients admitted to hospital were two-and-a-half times higher than at the same time a year ago.
