Mainers should be prepared for a little bit of nearly everything over the next couple of days, which the National Weather Service says will be bring rain, snow, ice jams, rising temperatures, fall temperatures, rising rivers and coastal flooding.

A period of freezing rain and sleet was expected before the transition to all snow around 12 a.m. Saturday in areas along the Ohio River which the changeover shifting east from there through the Saturday morning hours. "Especially young children and those that are sensitive to cold temperatures, like the elderly, should definitely bundle up if heading outside in this cold weather", said National Weather Service meteorologist Kevin Skow.

The Weather Channel reports an extreme upper atmosphere affect in Spearfish, S.D., where the temperature plummeted 49 degrees in two minutes.

"Putting it all together, heavy rainfall coupled with rapid snowmelt will result in a significant urban street flooding threat mainly late [Friday] afternoon and into tonight, " forecasters wrote.

The winter weather advisory should end at 10 a.m. tomorrow, said the National Weather Service. Conditions then appear favorable for more lake-effect snow through early next week. The temperature will drop to the 20s by 5 p.m. Saturday, the weather service said.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy turning partly cloudy with snow tapering to snow showers. Total snow and sleet accumulations are forecast to be 1 and 3 inches, with some locally higher amounts possible.

Freezing rain is expected overnight and early morning Friday. Winds throughout Thursday morning and early afternoon may gust up to 45 miles per hour.

There are no wind chill factors in the forecasts for Sunday and Monday.
