US will pull out of Iran deal if Europe fails

While approving the waiver on United States sanctions related to the nuclear deal, Washington announced other sanctions against 14 Iranian entities and people, including judiciary head Ayatollah Sadeq Larijani, a close ally of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

West believes that Iran could use that decision to restart its own nuclear program and that would encourage other countries in that region to do the same thing. Trump will also demand Iran allow easier and more immediate access to worldwide inspections of its nuclear sites. In the absence of such an agreement, the United States will not again waive sanctions in order to stay in the Iran nuclear deal. The US is cutting off the Iranian regime's money flows to terrorists, he said. He didn't want to do it three months ago or previous year either.

The US has taken a tough line on the recent demonstrations in Iran, condemning the Iranian regime and voicing support for the protestors. The Treasury Department also designated two Iranian defense industry firms that provide key maintenance and overhaul services for the military's helicopter and aircraft. Rajaee Shahr Prison and its director, Gholamreza Ziaei, also were included on the sanctions list. It is also wants to address Iran's ballistic missile programme.

Iran, too, has been abundantly clear that it will not renegotiate the deal. He wants to require more robust inspections of nuclear facilities.

Some of those deadlines came up this week. "Of course we would not like such a thing to happen as we made a lot of effort to achieve the JCPOA", said Ali Akbar Salehi, head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization, at the time.

Other sanctioned entities included another China-based company, Bochuang Ceramic Corp, and the Iranian firm it sought to supply with a chemical compound used in the transmission of electrical signals. They note that since the deal was signed, Iran has continued to hold some Americans and other Westerners in jail. The move will keep the nuclear deal in place but add sanctions on Iranian businesses and leaders who have supported terrorist groups. They argue that if the US pulls out, Iran might kick out worldwide nuclear inspectors.

She said the German government would continue to advocate the full implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

Three months ago, Trump answered a congressional deadline by refusing to "certify" USA participation in the deal. The Treasury Department's action hits 14 Iranian officials and companies and businessmen from Iran, China and Malaysia, freezing any assets they have in the US and banning Americans from doing business with them.

In October, Trump said that he would not certify the deal, a dramatic but largely ceremonial gesture that he is expected to repeat this week.
