Trump to Give Iran Deal Another Reprieve

Senior administration officials said this would be the last time Trump would extend the current sanctions waiver unless he can reach a deal with European allies that would put tougher restrictions on Iran, including limits to its ballistic missile program.

Brokered and signed by the US, UK, Russia, France, China, and Germany, the JCPOA places limitations on Iran's nuclear energy program in return for the lifting of economic sanctions on Tehran.

Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov criticised remarks by US President Donald Trump, who yesterday said the US will not reimpose nuclear sanctions on Iran for the moment, but would withdraw later this year unless the terms of the deal are changed.

The President wants Congress to modify a law that reviews USA participation in the nuclear deal to include "trigger points" that, if violated, would lead to the United States reimposing its sanctions, the official said.

Under the deal, the USA president must sign a waiver suspending the US sanctions on Iran every 120 days. JCPOA is not renegotiable: "rather than repeating exhausted rhetoric, U.S. must bring itself into full compliance -just like Iran", Zarif said on his social Twitter account.

The next deadline to waive sanctions under the agreement is the middle of May.

Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said earlier on Twitter that the deal was "not renegotiable" and that Trump's move "amounts to desperate attempts to undermine a solid multilateral agreement".

The EU and United Kingdom also acknowledged Trump's announcement, but said they would not decide on a course of action until discussing it further with the deal's European signatories.

On one level, those protests made President Trump, if anything, more intent on walking away from the deal as a way of punishing the regime.

There are few Obama-era iniatitives that President Trump has denounced as vociferously as the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement.

The waiver he will sign suspends USA sanctions on Iran for another 120 days. Bob Corker (R-TN) and Ben Cardin (D-MD) have been working with White House National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster on an agreement that would keep the Iran deal intact. "We have been under USA sanctions for the last 40 years", said Farshad Alyan, a 26-year-old law student.

The old, central bank sanctions largely cut Iran out of the worldwide financial system, and are considered to be the most powerful of the penalties imposed by the USA during the Obama era, along with global penalties for buying Iranian oil.

As the tensions between Washington and Tehran continue to rise, a senior Iranian official said that his country will continue to develop ballistic missiles.
