TMAF helping raise awareness during National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month

Human trafficking is commonly referred to as modern day slavery, and involves the exploitation of a person through force, fraud, or coercion for the objective of commercial sex or forced labor.

The month of January is also designated as human trafficking prevention month. "We're failing to detect human traffickers who are abusing the system".

Fearless survivors like Tiffany are helping officials better identify the scope and problem of human trafficking in our state as they work to put an end to the underground crime.

For years, Pennsylvania resident Catherine "Cat" Rojas lived a life filled with sexual exploitation. She told her story of survival growing up in Freeburg becoming a victim at 13 years old.

This campaign and the ongoing enforcement efforts are the latest public sector pushes in Nebraska to target and mete out demand for the sale of minors and adults coerced or forced into sex, officials said.

The Human Trafficking Initiative has said 11 percent of the people sold online for sex in Nebraska are advertised as under the age of 21. "So, you can feel safe and answer our questions".

"It is critical that as a community we understand the various ways that children are lured into the sex trade", said Nick Macchione, director of the County Health and Human Services Agency. Often they feel trapped: If they complain, they will lose their jobs; if they lose their jobs, they'll be deported, and they'd return home without the money they paid to get the visa assistance. "It does not discriminate", Rojas said. It's happening to girls that come from good homes.

Whether its labor or sexual trafficking, there are a few signs to keep an eye out for.

It is also defined as the "recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision or obtaining of a person for labor or services, through the use of force, fraud or coercion for the objective of subjection to involuntary servitude, peonage, debt bondage or slavery".

The state Department of Children and Families will establish the Anti-Human Trafficking Advisory Council this year, which will advise state agencies on how to combat trafficking. "If you have one specific model of what human trafficking looks like in your head, you can overlook the way that plays out in people's lives". "We believe they will bring value to the service of this cause".

Majarais and Wilson said ongoing education is key to strengthening the state's human trafficking policies. "So some possible indicators would be a certain tattoo because most traffickers do brand their victims", said Evans.

By July 1, PennDOT hopes to have the almost 15,000 transit agency employees across the state trained.
