'Three Billboards' interview: Director Martin McDonagh bemoans 'bland PC filmmaking'

"The film won four Golden Globe Awards, including best motion picture drama, supporting actor, and actress Frances McDormand".

In addition to Rockwell's category, the film was nominated for: Best Drama, Martin McDonagh for Best Director, Frances McDormand for Best Dramatic Actress, Martin McDonagh for Best Screenplay and Best Original Score.

In fact, all of the night's multiple award winners were stories that centered on women: "Lady Bird", "The Shape of Water", "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel", and "The Handmaid's Tale". James Franco may also see his chances bolstered by handicappers after earning a best actor in a comedy or musical for playing Tommy Wiseau in "The Disaster Artist". There are separate competitions for the best drama film as well as the best comedy and musical picture.

Though the Golden Globes is one of the major nights of awards season, as it's aired on NBC and all the big buzzed-about movies are in the running (in both the drama and musical/comedy categories), if you dig a bit deeper you'll find that the Globes don't often mesh with the Academy Awards.

"Thank you", she said in response to an interviewer's congratulations on her film work. Nor did Aziz Ansari, who won the same prize in the TV category for Master Of None; nor did Gary Oldman, named best actor in a drama for Darkest Hour.

The Handsmaid's Tale also lived up to its critical acclaim, winning the award for best TV series (Drama), with Elizabeth Moss also walking away with the best actress trophy for her role in the series.

The revelations about sexual harassment in Hollywood cast a shadow over the evening, from the black dresses worn by nearly every attendee to the many "Time's Up" pins that could be seen pinned to lapels in support of an initiative launched last week to combat workplace harassment. Nicole Kidman won her fourth Golden Globe for her role as Celeste Wright in Big Little Lies, as well.

The Boss Baby was robbed of its Best Animated Feature Golden Globe award, losing out to Pixar's Coco.

Her co-stars Alexander Skarsgard and Laura Dern won Best Supporting Actor and Actress, and the show also won for Best Limited Series or TV movie. She then spoke about how important this year's Golden Globes will be to so many, from young black girls seeing a black woman win a lifetime achievement award, to survivors of sexual assault and harassment seeing so many people stand in solidarity with them. "Marijuana is finally allowed and sexual harassment finally isn't".

During the ceremony, Oprah Winfrey will receive the HFPA's Cecil B. DeMille Award.

"I am being seen for who I am, and being appreciated for who I am, and it makes it that much more hard to dismiss me or dismiss anybody who looks like me", Brown said.

Her socially, or rather politically charged speech, which some media outlets referred to as the "emotional anchor" of the night, dominated the ceremony and was closely followed by others. The movie, along with McDormand and Rockwell, will be in the running when Oscar nominations are announced January 23.
