'This guy is a bigot,' Atlanta immigrants say of Trump's reported comments

The African Union (AU), an organisation which promotes cooperation on the continent, said it was alarmed by Trump's "very racist" comments.

The scandal erupted after Donald Trump wondered why the United States would want to have immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador and African nations, referring to some as "shithole countries", and suggested America should welcome more people from nations like Norway instead. He added that he never said anything derogatory about Haitians.

In a tweet on Friday, Trump denied using the word "shithole", but Durbin insisted that the president had indeed said it.

"So while we were preparing to be having a press conference in remembrance of the half a million people who lost their lives-countless displaced", Jacquet says, "we're addressing the degrading, demoralizing, disgusting remarks by someone who is supposed to be the face of our great nation". The 57-year-old, who founded the J/P Haitian Relief Organization and helped Haitians recover from the devastating quake that ravished the Caribbean country eight years ago, called on Americans to unite against Trump's troubling rhetoric.

Greg Valliere, chief strategist at Horizon Investments, said the comments were detrimental given the already fractured discussions, since Democrats can block any spending agreement and Trump's comments solidify their stance on immigration.

The president, who appeared in a videotaped address, has big support from the newly hyphenated Venezuelans and Cubans, who support his hard line against those governments.

One woman he interviewed said she might consider trying the American dream: "If they get a new president".

"I don't think it makes it impossible, but I suspect the Democrats are sitting there going: 'Why would we want to compromise with him on anything?'"

"The language used by me at the DACA meeting was tough, but this was not the language used".

In his tweet, Mahama referred to speech made by Trump to African leaders at the United Nations in September, when the USA president praised their nations but also mistakenly referred to a nonexistent country called "Nambia".

In a series of Friday morning tweets, Trump said he used tough language during Thursday's meeting, but he denied using vulgarities. Trump reportedly said this Thursday during a meeting with lawmakers regarding a bipartisan immigration deal.

Trump wrote on Twitter early Friday. "Do you have to spray paint the "N" word in the oval office or have a hood in the Lincoln bedroom to be a racist?" he asked, claiming Trump will be building this "racist and bigoted point of view" into "the very fabric of policy in this country".

Akufo-Addo's predecessor, John Dramani Mahama, also criticized Trump's comments Saturday.

Baraldsnes found a USA citizen living in Norway and asked why she made the move, in the opposite direction. "This isn't just a story about vulgar language, it's about opening the door to humanity's worst side, about validating and encouraging racism and xenophobia", United Nations human rights spokesman Rupert Colville said.
