Team GB targeting best-ever medal haul

British athletes are set for their best ever Winter Olympics according to UK Sport, which is targeting at least five medals from the Games in Pyeongchang next month.

NBC will air over 50 hours of live VR coverage of the 2018 Winter Olympics to USA pay-TV subscribers, Variety reports. Included in the more than 50 hours of coverage will be the opening and closing ceremonies, alpine skiing, curling, snowboarding, skeleton, figure skating, short track, ski jumping, ice hockey, big air, and more.

NBC presented some VR content during the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, but those events were made available the following day, rather than live.

The content will be available to pay-TV customers who authenticate through the NBC Sports VR app. Some of its prior VR coverage includes weekly Major League Baseball games, NCAA basketball tournament games and PGA golf events.

VR streaming in sports isn't a novel idea, but this would be the first time for the Olympics to be streamed in VR to nearly all VR headsets.

On-Demand Highlights: Post-event, on-demand 3- to 5-minute features will be available showcasing the best moments from each event.

Through the Intel True VR experience, viewers will be able to tour the Olympic venues.

That has more than doubled to £32m over four years for Pyeongchang, but the sums involved contrast starkly with the £100m annual investment in summer Olympic sports.

The Olympic games are scheduled for February 8 to 25 and the Paralympic games March 9 to 18.

A research study led by geography professor Daniel Scott at the University of Waterloo says the number of places that will be cold enough to host a Winter Olympics is dropping.
