Swiss insist on stunning lobsters before cooking

Lobsters may not really scream when you boil them - they don't possess vocal cords - but research shows they can feel pain, and Switzerland's government made a decision to do something about the common culinary practice of boiling lobsters alive. The country has revamped its laws to further protect animals including large marine crustaceans.

"I don't know how many lobsters are boiled in Switzerland per year, but it's probably quite a small amount compared with the billions upon billions of crustaceans that are used each year in the human food chain", he says. The government banned the practice of boiling live lobsters amid concerns the creatures might be able to experience pain.

The new law doesn't mean taking lobster off the menu.

Lobsters are a delicious delicacy loved by coastal dwellers across the world - but is boiling them alive inhumane?

The landmark legislation come amid growing scientific evidence that invertebrates such as lobsters, crabs and crayfish are capable of feeling pain.

It will be also illegal to transport lobsters in ice or icy water as the revamped laws ruled that all aquatic species must always be in their natural environment.

According to Swiss cabinet officials, animals are sentient and therefore must not be allowed to suffer unnecessarily.

The results revealed that the crabs were more likely to leave the shelter which gave off the shocks, whereas the animals in the other shelter remained there. Thankfully, there are new devices that can stun a lobster in a fast and humane way, with the voltage also killing the bacteria. This indicate that crustaceans manifest rapid avoidance learning to keep away from certain stimuli such as pain. Animal rights activists and scientists have claimed lobsters could feel "significant pain" when they are thrown alive into boiling water. They'll also get other protections while in transit.

Switzerland's decision is applauded by Professor Robert Elwood, emeritus professor in ecology, evolution, behaviour and environmental economics at Queens University, Belfast. An Italian court ruled last June that lobsters can not be kept on ice in restaurant kitchens because it causes them undue suffering.

Animal welfare advocates praised the new law and said other countries should follow suit.
