Shasta County man confesses in TV interview to 1993 cold case murder

McAlister, 19, had gone missing in May 1993 and his remains were found by a hiker in California's Shingletown. His auto had been abandoned at a Costco.

After the interview was over, the TV station informed Redding's chief of police and the Shasta County Sheriff's Office that Hawkins was on his way to confess to a crime. Then someone walked into a television news station Tuesday and confessed.

Brian Hawkins told KRCR of Redding that he and two accomplices robbed and killed 19-year-old Frank Wesley McAlister, whose slaying was unsolved for almost 25 years.

The case went cold, and for 25 years, the family had no answers in regards to who Frank's killer was.

Hawkins said he hopes the community can forgive him.

"God, Christ - these things that have happened throughout my whole life since then, for over 25 years, have pushed me and pushed me to do the right thing", Hawkins said.

'I know the wrong can't be changed but this is the closest I can come to doing the right thing'. Of the three, the men are each being held on $1 million bails, although Shanna Culver is being held without bail. Before he made it, however, McAlister's dad died, he said. Investigators found "a large amount of blood located in the vehicle".

An insurance settlement McAlister received prior to his slaying ― approximately $4,500 from a auto accident ― might have been a motive in his death, according to the Redding Record Searchlight. He said he wanted people to know he was remorseful.

McAlister drove the group to a rural area in Shingletown, the complaint says. The trio lured him out to Shingletown - under the guise of selling him meth - but they robbed him instead, before Hawkins and Curtis Culver allegedly stabbed him to death. His vehicle was found abandoned at a Costco parking lot with a "large amount of blood".

During their interviews with police this week, Hawkins and the Culvers gave different accounts.

Cops determined that he had been stabbed to death during a robbery. He also told the police his siblings Curtis Culver and Shanna Culver were a part of the crime, ABC News reported.

As a result of Hawkins' confession, Redding police immediately searched out and rounded up two of his alleged accomplices: 46-year-old Shanna Culver and her brother, 45-year-old Curtis Culver.

During the interview with the TV station, Hawkins shed tears and appeared shaken.

"I've been through hell my whole life because of this", Hawkins told the station through tears, saying that he even reached out to McAlister's family a year ago. "All the detectives that had worked it have long since retired", Capt. Eric Wallace said Friday.
