Saudi warplane crashes in Yemen: Coalition

Saudi Arabia leads a military coalition that intervened in Yemen in March 2015 with the stated aim of rolling back Houthi rebel gains and restoring the country's internationally recognised government to power.

Initial reports said Tareq was killed in the fighting that erupted after Saleh called on the Saudi-led coalition to end the war, a move interpreted by the Houthis as a betrayal.

Al-Maliki said that the missile was in the direction of the city of Najran and was deliberately launched to target civilian and populated areas.

Saudi state news agency said the missile was intercepted and destroyed, causing no casualties.

Al-Maliki renewed his call to the worldwide community to take more serious and effective steps to stop the blatant Iranian violations through the continued smuggling and transfer of ballistic missiles and weapons to terrorist groups.

Yemen, one of the Arab world's poorest countries, is embroiled in a proxy war between the Houthi armed movement, allied with Iran, and a USA -backed military coalition headed by Saudi Arabia.

Addressing supporters in the southern Shabwa province - where he had travelled to offer condolences to the family of Aref al-Zouka, who was killed along with Saleh in the attack on Saleh's residence in Sanaa - Tareq said he remained committed to his uncle's quest for peace in Yemen.

Some 8 million people are on the brink of starvation, more than 10,000 have been killed and tens of thousands of others are struggling with cholera, diphtheria and other diseases.

Iran has strongly denied arming the Huthis and in December 2017 accused the United States of presenting "fabricated" evidence that a November 4 missile fired at Riyadh airport was Iranian-made.
