Russia: Military bases in Syria attacked by drones

The statement came a day after the Defense Ministry said that 13 armed drones were used to attack its facilities in Hmeimim and Tartus overnight on January 5-6.

The main Russian air and naval bases in Syria beat back an attack by 13 armed drones over the weekend, the Russian Ministry of Defense said on Monday.

Russian forces in Syria have come under attack by a swarm of apparently crudely made drones. "Rather than have the Russian electorate focus on massive corruption or on a weak economy, Mr. Putin prefers to have them focus instead on Russia's alleged return to a great power status", Hof added.

Alhamrat Street in Tartus, Syria, where Russian Federation keeps a military air base.

"With the excuse of al-Nusra, the regime is targeting the moderate opposition".

"Any suggestion the USA, the Coalition or our partnered forces played a role in an attack on a Russian base is without any basis in fact and utterly irresponsible", Defense Department spokesman Eric Pahon told Business Insider in an email, adding over the phone that the insinuation is "absolute bonkers".

Putin faces a presidential election this March, and although he is expected to win easily, polls indicate that Russians are increasingly disgruntled about the country's military presence in Syria.

If the report is accurate, the Russian forces are lucky the attack wasn't worse, because whoever unleashed these drones wasn't fooling around.

The week before, Russian military journalist Roman Saponkov published photos on social media that appeared to show warplanes damaged in a mortar attack on Russia's Hmeimim base on New Year's Eve.

The fact of usage of strike aircraft-type drones by terrorists is the evidence that militants have received technologies to carry out terrorist attacks using such UAVs in any country. This was stated by the Russian Defense Ministry, FOCUS reported quoting TASS.

Most of the Islamic State drones used against U.S. allies, moreover, had a range of no more than 1-2km, according to an analysis by the defense consultancy IHS Markit group.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's family belong to to Alawite branch of Islam, who mostly reside in Latakia province.

As agreed in Astana talks by Turkey, Russia and Iran, Turkish military is now deployed in Idlib to set up observation posts and monitor the implementation of de-escalation zones.

Russian Federation and Iran strongly support Syrian regime leader Bashar al Assad's regime, while Turkey backs some of the groups opposed to him.

Cavusoglu said Ankara would host a meeting on Syria with like-minded countries after the summit in Russia's Sochi.
